Fresh Cut Flower Care

Extending the vase life of fresh flowers requires careful handling and proper maintenance. If you have a bouquet prepared by Howlin Hollar Farm we have prepared the flowers to encourage blooming and reduce the stress of harvest.

Bouquets from the farm that you take home in a vessel have proper food and treatment. You can start at step 4 for these bouquets.

Market bouquets, U-pick or wrapped bouquets start at step 1.

Here are some effective tips to help you enjoy your blooms longer:

  1. Prepare the Vase Properly:

    • Use a clean vase filled with lukewarm water. Add flower food or preservative as directed to nourish the flowers and inhibit bacterial growth.

  2. Cutting and Trimming:

    • Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle just before placing them in water. This increases the surface area for water absorption.

    • Use sharp scissors or a knife to make clean cuts. Avoid smashing or crushing the stems.

  3. Remove Excess Foliage:

    • Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water. Foliage in water promotes bacterial growth, which can shorten the lifespan of your flowers.

  4. Water Quality and Maintenance:

    • Change the water every 2-3 days or sooner if it becomes cloudy or discolored. Clean the vase thoroughly each time to remove bacteria.

    • Rinse the vase and refill with fresh lukewarm water. Add new flower food according to the instructions.

  5. Environment and Placement:

    • Place your bouquet away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. A cool room temperature (around 65-72°F or 18-22°C) is ideal.

    • Avoid placing flowers near ripening fruits or vegetables, as they release ethylene gas, which accelerates flower aging.

  6. Hydration and Hygiene:

    • Check the water level daily and top up as needed to ensure all stems remain submerged.

    • Keep the vase clean and free from debris, which can contaminate the water and affect flower health.

  7. Prune and Refresh:

    • Remove any wilting or spent blooms promptly to prevent ethylene production and bacterial growth. This encourages the remaining flowers to stay fresh longer.

    • Trim the stems every few days, re-cutting at a 45-degree angle. This keeps the vascular system of the flowers open and facilitates water uptake.

  8. Enjoyment and Display:

    • Arrange your flowers carefully, ensuring each stem has enough space to breathe and showcase its beauty. A good rule of thumb is a bee should be able to move between each flower so don’t pack them in to tightly.

    • Appreciate the unique qualities of your locally sourced specialty flowers, whether they're brightening your home or enhancing a special occasion.

By following these tips, you can significantly extend the vase life of your fresh specialty cut local flowers, allowing you to enjoy their beauty and fragrance for an extended period.
